GENWEBMainTitle: GENIVAR employees launch an initiative to combat greenhouse gas emissions

GENWEBMainContent:

Laure Gérard, Eng., and Sophie Francon, Eng., of GENIVAR’s Environment unit in Montreal, will be speaking at an event organized by the Montreal regional chapter of the Quebec Order of Engineers (RIM/OIQ).

Nowadays, most large companies are taking sustainability into account when formulating their corporate strategies. At the same time, the North American regulatory context is changing rapidly as society becomes increasingly focused on green issues. Against this backdrop, the “carbon neutral” concept (i.e., reducing or completely offsetting our greenhouse gas emissions) may be viewed as a proactive way to effectively address the challenges imposed by climate change.

In their 30-minute presentation, Laure and Sophie will discuss solutions aimed at capitalizing on the environmental pressures currently impacting our activities and will provide a practical description of their initiative to combat GHG emissions.

Snags Two AICQ Awards

GENWEBMainTitle: GENIVAR Snags Two AICQ Awards of Excellence!

GENWEBMainContent:

The St. Marie Pavilion project garnered the Prix Visionnaire and the reconfiguration of the Taschereau Interchange won the prix infrastructures de transport.

The Prix Visionnaire, which is the top honour in this 2008 edition of the Quebec Consulting Engineers Awards, was the jewel in the crown of GENIVAR’s bold and innovative St. Marie Pavilion expansion project. The firm not only provided ingenious technological solutions to complex problems but especially promoted an approach that ensured our client’s participation which was intrinsic to the success of the project. From the beginning, GENIVAR’s professionals understood that listening to the client, the Sisters of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, would guide us in formulating recommendations for the best approach to take in the construction of the first building to aim for LEED Gold Certification. Moreover, GENIVAR succeeded in answering the occupant's need for tranquility and comfort while ensuring that the building would deliver substantial energy savings.

The reconfiguration of the Taschereau Interchange and Highway 10 in Brossard was honoured with the Prix Infrastructures de transport. It was a spectacular rehabilitation of an interchange that was built in the mid-1960s and was in dire need of an overhaul. Among the works GENIVAR has completed were the reconstruction of six kilometres of expressway and the construction of 16 kilometres of access lanes and a five-kilometre sound barrier. The project also included five overpasses, a new lighting system, and an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) which is connected to the Montreal terminal. After seven years of work, our transportation specialists have allowed Taschereau Interchange users to access road infrastructures which not only meet modern demands but also provide a functional and user-friendly road network and public transportation system for all users.

Six New Prestigious Mandates Across Canada

GENWEBMainTitle: Transportation: Six New Prestigious Mandates Across Canada

GENWEBMainContent:

1- GENIVAR Gets the Nod for Montreal’s Tramway Project
GENIVAR, as part of a consortium, won Phase I of a study to build a tramway network in Montreal. The network is consistent with the new strategic direction of the City of Montreal’s transportation plan which aims to strengthen the urban structure and revitalize neighbourhoods and traffic arteries.

As part of the crucially important first phase, GENIVAR will define the initial network configuration and identify potential routes for tramlines, particularly the inaugural line. A status report on existing tramway technologies will be drawn up and potential sites for the garage will be identified.

The creation of the tramway network provides an opportunity to review roadway allocation for auto traffic, mass transit, cyclists and pedestrians. This will be a major challenge in view of the stated objectives for each of these stakeholder groups.

2- Green Light for the Rapibus Project in Gatineau
The City of Gatineau, together with various other partners, has given the green light to Rapibus, a mass transit project valued at $195 million. As part of a consortium, GENIVAR will construct a rapid transit system along the existing Quebec-Gatineau rail line, including a 17 km two-way bus-only corridor and a bike path. Approximately 12 Rapibus stations will eventually serve as hubs for civil infrastructure, businesses, office buildings and apartment blocks.

The Rapibus project ties in with transportation and sustainable development policies aimed at promoting bus ridership in the Outaouais region. According to preliminary studies, ridership is expected to increase by 15% during the first year of service, with 25,000 new users. The project will also help to reduce traffic congestion.

3- Traffic light upgrade: Phase II
In 2003, the City of Montreal commissioned GENIVAR, as part of a consortium of companies, to oversee the first phase of its traffic light upgrade project. Phase I involved upgrading more than 600 traffic lights, including adding pedestrian crossing signals, replacing incandescent lamps with LED lamps and introducing new features (e.g., audible traffic lights and priority measures for buses). The ultimate goal was to enhance user safety and to upgrade the City’s equipment standards.

Focusing on continuity, GENIVAR is also involved in Phase II which will cover traffic light upgrades in the nine former boroughs of the City of Montreal, in addition to work in the various other administrative divisions of Montreal island.

4- Accelerated Pavement Rehabilitation for Central and North Central Alberta
In order to make headway in the rehabilitation of Alberta’s highways, Alberta Transportation has begun an Accelerated Paving Program in which individual highway mandates are bundled in groups of six or seven. GENIVAR has done the preliminary work which consists of identifying deficient items that are unrelated to paving. These include side slope improvements, intersection improvements, culvert repair and climbing lane construction.

In the central segment, GENIVAR has performed geometric assessments on each item and submitted a preliminary package with estimated costs to Alberta Transportation. The team will assemble a large tender to do the overlays which will require over 250 thousand tonnes of asphalt.

For the north central segment, projects will be completed in 2009 and the paving contractors will be able to begin their work in 2010.

5- Highway 66 Planning Study in Ontario
On behalf of the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO), GENIVAR in Ontario is performing a planning study in order to identify a new corridor for the future realignment of Highway 66 in the vicinity of Virginiatown and Kearns, Ontario.

The study began in September 2008 and will include recommendations for future environmental assessment study and design requirements.

The expected completion date is May 2009.

6- Detail Design Study and Class Environmental Assessment for Highway 62 in Ontario
The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) has retained GENIVAR to conduct a Detail Design Study and Class Environmental Assessment mandate for the improvements to Highway. The study areas are located in the Township of Tudor and Cashel and Township of Limerick, County of Hastings.

The design will be completed in the Spring of 2009 and construction completion is slated for 2011.

Revitalizing Quebec City Shared pride

GENWEBMainTitle: GENIVAR: A key player in the revitalization of Québec City for its 400th Anniversary

GENWEBMainContent: With the enormously successful festivities commemorating the 400th anniversary of the founding of Québec City in full swing, legions of residents and visitors from around the world are touring and enjoying the many facilities developed and rehabilitated by our firm.

Samuel-De Champlain Promenade
Among the projects carried out by GENIVAR was the transformation of Champlain Boulevard into an urban promenade. GENIVAR is recognized in the field of development and territory enhancement, and this park-lined urban boulevard constitutes an eloquent example of this know-how. A multidisciplinary team specialized in civil engineering, maritime engineering, hydraulics, decontamination, building engineering, traffic control, and security contributed their expertise to this 2.5-km-long stretch.

The Samuel-De Champlain Promenade boasts four new lanes, multi-use trails, picnic and rest areas, sports facilities, a completely rebuilt quay, a welcome centre, and many public spaces. Transformed under the delighted eyes of its users, it features many artefacts found on the site during the project that have been carefully preserved and put on display; 83 lit fountains up to six metres high at Quai-des-Flots, a boat-shaped sculpture at Quai-des-Hommes, and a host of other works of art dotted the length of the park.

Espace 400e
Located in the Louise Basin in the Old Port of Québec, the site was redeveloped and refitted with a welcome venue and meeting place, walkways around the periphery, and many other features, all in a spirit of sustainability. During the festivities, the site will host close to 2,000 music shows and performances, as well as more than 100 workshops for children and young people. The site also features meeting areas where some 100 conferences, debates, remarks, discussions, round tables, and master classes will be held.

The Brown Basin
The renovation of the Brown Basin, a site that was central to the history of Quebec City’s port, has allowed residents and visitors to enjoy access to another area with superb views. A long footbridge and pedestrian walkway allow a link to the Cap-Blanc stairway, and also links the Plains of Abraham and the Upper Town to the shoreline. A green building with windows houses an interpretation centre, and visitors there can learn about the history of this basin, formerly known as the l’Anse des Mères in honour of its original owners, the Ursulines and the Augustines.

Congratulations to all employees who contributed to the overwhelming success of these tremendously prestigious projects!

GENWEBMainTitle: GENIVAR Projects Honoured by the Quebec Chapter of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC)

GENWEBMainContent: Winning in the Green Building category, the new Kuujjuaq Airport Terminal was designed so that the preformed steel frame and the white steel roof would reflect light during the summer months. The building also meets LEED silver certification criteria. The project includes a number of innovative features including a cooling system and a central skylight.

The Quebec City Cancer Research Centre (CRCEO) was the winner in the Commercial/Institutional Projects category. Various project challenges, including building on a narrow and steep site, were brilliantly met. On the upper floors of the building, the steel frame is covered with stainless steel, in keeping with the surrounding architecture. Starting from the main entrance, a harmonious blend of steel, glass and stone sets the tone for the entire facility.

The Mulets River Bridge (Highway 15) in Sainte Adele won an honourable mention. Built in 1963, one of the two bridges spanning Mulets River on Highway 15 had to be demolished and replaced. Consisting of a steel beam deck and a thin, reinforced concrete slab, the new 216-metre-long structure has three continuous approaches.

The mandate represents the continuation of the work already started and will provide detailed engineering, plans and specifications, supervision of the work, and geosynthetic component quality assurance.

This is one of the first times in Canada that a fluidized-bed biological process will be used in the treatment of leachate wastewater. It is significant because this process is more efficient and economical than traditional methods.

The project is scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2008. Approximately 65,000m3 of leachate will be treated annually. The work will include the installation of a 1.5km inflow pipe, the addition of a new storage basin and two pumping stations, modifications to the existing aeration system and basins, implementation of the fluidized-bed process, a leachate heating system, and any other related work.

Precast Concrete Slabs for Highway 13

GENWEBMainTitle: GENIVAR Carries out Imaginative Project Using Precast Concrete Slabs for Highway 13

GENWEBMainContent:
The reconstruction on Highway 13 at Boisbriand -- from the Thousand Island Bridge to Highway 640 -- called on the pioneering installation of precast concrete slabs. At the cost of $22 million, this work was carried out on a surface of 82,000 square meters including 2,000 square meters of precast concrete slabs. The slabs were installed during two weekends, one direction of traffic per weekend. The process reduced construction delays by 10 weeks and facilitated traffic circulation during the construction period.

Raymond Assaf, Eng., M. Eng., supervised the team and was entrusted with this major mandate. With over 30 years in highway engineering, Mr. Assaf has spent the last 10 years as project director for GENIVAR. A leader in his chosen profession, the impressive range of his projects speaks for itself, as witnessed by the many awards he has received for his work: the reconstructions of Highway 13 in Laval and Highway 40 East in Montréal between Sources Boulevard and Highway 520 have both been singled out for excellence of achievement by the Association des ingénieurs-conseil du Québec (Association of Consulting Engineers of Québec).

In addition to having worked for the Quebec Ministry of Transportation for 25 years, Mr. Assaf has also completed more than 70 other mandates. Ever present on the engineering scene, he contributes to the advancement of trailblazing technology in the field of route structure, and is a member of several committees including those for design and construction standards, pavement management and follow-up of implementation of computer-aided design for the Quebec Ministry of Transportation. He is also responsible for the development committee preparing the Guide de la préparation des projets routiers (the Guide on Development Work for Highway Projects). In many ways, through his sense of leadership and his dynamism, Mr. Assaf promotes the smooth running of all mega projects.

Port of Spain Transportation Plan

GENWEBMainTitle: Port of Spain Transportation Plan and CBD Rehabilitation Awarded to GENIVAR

GENWEBMainContent:
GENIVAR has been mandated to prepare a Master Plan for the greater Port of Spain Area. This Master Plan examined the following themes:

• Traffic & Transportation

• Utilities, Sewers & Water

• Flood Control & Storm Sewers

• Urban Design, Planning & Landscaping

In order to undertake this analysis, a review of existing data was conducted and additional counts and surveys were undertaken as needed. Once the needs were clearly understood wide-ranging transportation improvements were developed including construction of new highways and arterial roads, provision of a new downtown public transit circulator system and the integration of a planned rapid transit system.

Apart from preparing the Master Plan, the project also included preparing the plans and specifications for the rehabilitation of the CBD in conformance to the Master Plan. This included burial of all utilities, rehabilitation of underground pipes and utilities and the complete reconstruction of streets and sidewalks. Furthermore, this rehabilitation included the full streetscaping of the CBD with the inclusion of street furniture and landscaping.

In order to conduct this work, the entire CBD -- its roadways, sidewalks, utilities and other services -- was surveyed in detail. This rehabilitation also led to the complete reorganisation of the one-way street network and the installation of an entirely new traffic control system and new on-street parking regulations.

lead a pre-feasibility study in Nunavik

GENWEBMainTitle: GENIVAR commissioned to lead a pre-feasibility study in Nunavik, QC

GENWEBMainContent:
The pre-feasibility study, which will be conducted as a consortium, will include an impact analysis of a potential road link to Hudson’s Bay, in line with the Quebec government’s commitment to implement its Northern Plan. The area in question is currently only accessible by sea or air.

The approximately 260km road link would run from the village of Radisson (north of Nunavik) and would connect with two communities on Hudson’s Bay, the Cree village of Whapmagoostui and the Inuit village of Kuujjuarapik.

Complementing the existing air and maritime transportation systems, road links with these villages would be of great strategic importance because of potentially significant economic benefits stemming from energy and mineral development in the region. Such positive effects will be evaluated during the study, in addition to the political and socio-economic impacts on the two First Nations communities and the potential repercussions for the development of tourism, recreation, fisheries and hunting.

The project will be financed by the Quebec Transportation Department (MTQ). It is scheduled to start shortly and to wrap up this summer.

Island Park Bridge in Ottawa

GENWEBMainTitle: GENIVAR in Brockville Participated in an Extraordinary Event

GENWEBMainContent:
GENIVAR’s Brockville office was contracted by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario to provide Contract Administration Services for the replacement of the Island Park Bridge over Hwy 417 (Ottawa Queensway) in the City of Ottawa. The contract, valued at approximately $8,680,000, began in March 2007 and will end in December 2007.

The bridge replacement was executed using Rapid Lift Technology. This was the first time this was done in Ontario. This Rapid Lift operation saved about a year in construction time and any impact on Hwy 417 traffic. The Queensway was closed in its entirety (and detoured) from Saturday evening at 8:00 p.m. to Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m. on August 11, while the bridges were being moved.

The new bridge was built in an offsite staging area and a Self Propelled Modular Transporter was used to remove the existing structure and place the new one. The removal and replacement took place over the weekend of August 10-11. Moving took approximately 6 hours starting at 8:00 p.m. Saturday and ending by 2:00 a.m. on Sunday.

This event received much media attention. Bleachers were in place to accommodate spectators and there was a live feed on the web site www.islandparkcamera.com.
