GENIVAR has been commissioned to design a bridge on Highway 138 over the Natashquan River (North Coast region of Quebec). A preliminary study was carried out to determine whether the 155-metre-long structure (including the back walls) should rest on one or two piers in the river. The solution that was adopted involved constructing two continuous spans with one pier in the river. The pier actually consists of two steel caissons (2,440 mm in diameter) anchored into the rock using Dywidag bars and topped with a reinforced concrete header. The advantage of this solution is that cofferdams do not have to be constructed.
