''In our view, GENIVAR’s designers and worksite personnel performed their duties with a high level of professionalism and in accordance with the established project criteria.''
Jean-Pierre Lepage, Vice-President, Development and Construction, Hydroméga Services Inc.
The project consisted of building a new run-of-river hydroelectric generating station (40.6 MW) on the site of the existing facility. The axis of the new dam was the same as that of the existing dam. This infrastructure design minimized and significantly reduced the project’s impact. The project did not regulate the Magpie River’s flow rate and the river’s water regime was affected only slightly by the new facility’s operations. The new facility has an average annual output of approximately 180 GWh. In addition to maximizing the site’s renewable energy potential, environmental rehabilitation was carried out (the site had been deteriorating since the old station was abandoned in 1989). Work on the project was completed over a two year period.
